Birth of Stars is an original performance that weaves mind-blowing advanced mathematical computations into a human story that mirrors the birth, life and death of stars. The narrative focuses on a young prodigy who seeks transcendence through science. Our prodigy, Sofia, is lithe and free in contrast to our second lead, a former prodigy and much-lauded astrophysicist, Stephen, who is in a terrible existential crisis. He’ll sacrifice his integrity for awards, while Sofia seeks purity in knowledge. Both are bullied because they are outsiders. Sofia suffers classic teen torment from her classmates while Stephen’s self loathing is his nemesis.
Birth of Stars was a co-production between the Theater Arts Department and the Digital Arts and New Media Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. It is made possible by the generous support of the Arts Dean’s Fund for Excellence, the Porter College Mini-Grant Program, the UCSC Institute of the Arts and Sciences, Mr. Ren Klyce, and MAXON 4D.
